Right for Planet

As part of the GN Group, we are working to set a science-aligned emissions reduction target and play our part in limiting global warming to below 1,5 degrees. Here are our specific aims to help us achieve this and how we’re doing so far.

Doing the right thing for the Planet

We are working to reduce emissions across our entire supply chain in order to align with global efforts to limit global warming to 1,5 degrees. We have already calculated our GHG emissions across Scopes 1, 2 and 3 (which totaled 110.390 tCO2e in 2021). In 2022, GN Group set science-based targets to reduce own operational emissions (scope 1 and 2) by 80%, and value chain emissions (scope 3) by 25% by 2030. These targets and our plans to reach them have been validated and approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). At SteelSeries we are determined to ensure that we meet these targets in 2030 and beyond as we work towards reaching net zero emissions.

We have committed to become carbon neutral across our direct operations and the energy we buy (Scopes 1 and 2) by 2025. We will buy 100% renewable electricity for all of our offices by 2025. Any remaining emissions that can't be avoided will be offset by investing in high quality and verified carbon removal projects. Meanwhile, we acknowledge that the vast majority of our carbon footprint is associated with Scope 3 (emissions we are indirectly responsible for up and down our value chain) and so this is where our efforts to reduce emissions must focus.

We are working to reduce the carbon impact of all our products, starting with a detailed understanding of their current impact and how to reduce it. We’ll be conducting this analysis (called ‘Life Cycle Assessments’) across our products. These assessments cover the kinds of materials used, how the product is manufactured, distributed and used as well as how waste is managed. By the end of 2023, we will have completed an LCA for at least one product from each of our core product categories (mice, keyboards and headsets) and will provide this data to our customers to help them consider the climate when making product choices.

We aim to reduce the emissions created by transporting our products from our factories to our warehouses by using sea (versus air) as far as possible. In 2021 60% of our product units were transported by sea and we’re working on increasing this percentage as much as we can.

In addition to working on reducing the impacts of our own business, we also want to highlight and support organizations that are doing great work to improve our planet. This is why we have become a partner to Plastic Bank. In 2023, SteelSeries will help stop the 45,454kg of plastic from entering the ocean in collaboration with Plastic Bank. SteelSeries is proud to be an Ocean Steward in collaboration with Plastic Bank. To read more about the work they are doing to protect our oceans visit their website: https://plasticbank.com/
